Lens Intro: Slide Rules Rule!

Posted by: mosaic In: lens introduction

Yes, I’ll admit that the title of the lens is pretty unoriginal, but it’s just not as punny (my word)  if it was called Slide Rules Rock! This lens is my shout-out to old-school geekdom: the slide rule.

In Slide Rules Rule!, you’ll find a basic intro to the history of the slipstick from Wikipedia and a bunch of cool links on the web. The web is really an amazing place and now, there are even lots of slide rule emulators. It’s almost like trying before you buy. Just kidding. But you can get the hang of how a slide rule works. I also recommend you check out the YouTube video on building your own slide rule (and the math behind its design). Click over to find the printout. This would be a great activity for school.

Actually, did you know that slide rules aren’t THAT old school? Watches with slide rules built in are still used today by pilots and other enthusiasts. Traditionally, these watches give aviators a quick way of calculating speed, flight time, and fuel use, and the watches look excellent. Consider getting one!

Do they even use these in schools now I wonder?
I remember having to work with them a lot, and also dealing with Logarithms… Very tedious.

I marked it to take a look tonight.
