Yesterday, July 31, I was very excited to discover some fantastic news. The Tales of Beedle the Bard will be available later this year! If you are not a Harry Potter fan, you may have no idea what I’m talking about. If you are, you still might have forgotten what is so significant about “Tales.”
In Book 7, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Professor Dumbledore gave Hermione a copy of a book called “The Tales of Beedle the Bard.” It is a book of five fairy tales, Aesop’s fables-like, that is traditionally read to all little wizards and witches. Both Hermione and Harry grew up with Muggles, so they were unfamiliar with the tales, though Ron had heard them all his life. The last fairy tale in the book was about three brothers, and it introduces the symbol and myth behind the Deathly Hallows.
J.K. Rowling handwrote seven original editions of this book. Six were given to close friends of the Harry Potter series, but one was auctioned off for charity through Sotheby’s last December. Amazon bought it for an unprecendented £1,950,000. However, because the rights to the stories were kept by J.K. Rowling, the public was not allowed access to any of the stories. Amazon held a writing content for which the prize was one weekend with the book.
Now, Harry Potter fans, no more worries! The mini-book is being released on December 4, 2008, just in time for Christmas. However, even more incredible is an Amazon exclusive offer: a collector’s edition designed to look like the original moonstone edition purchased by Amazon. This edition will include its own case, replica gemstones, a metal skull and clasp, and more. Furthermore, both the Standard and Collector’s edition will include notes and commentary of the tales from Professor Dumbledore himself. Pre-order your copy today!
