PepperJam and Blog Spam

Posted by: mosaic In: Uncategorized

Well, I took the plunge. After having many discussions with Captain Squid, reading countless webpages on affiliate marketing, searching through threads in the forum, I decided to take the plunge and sign up with PepperJam Networks. There were several reasons for me to think in this direction:

  1. My Squidoo pages do okay, but I haven’t had more than 2 in the Top Tier at the end of the month at once. Granted, I have fewer than 50 published lenses right now, but even still, the percentage earning top dollar is small. And you know things will only get more competitive.
  2. Sometimes, I wonder if my Amazon modules will really bring me that much money. I mean, everyone I know goes straight to Amazon to get stuff, or at least, to look for stuff. I want to be able to bring another place to shop for my visitors. Maybe stores that are more specialized.
  3. The lensrank hysteria really took me by surprise. And during that, the Captain said one clever thing: you can reduce your dependence on lensrank for payouts if you have other sources of payout. Like Affiliate Marketing. Hmmm.
  4. I was thinking between PepperJam and Commission Junction. In the end, though, I checked out the PepperJam partners on its blog and was glad to find more than just the eBook or dating companies as advertisers. Once I saw that BBC signed on, I decided to go for it. BBC is more my style than any kind of get-rich-quick or dating services company.

Now, I’m just waiting to hear back. Hope they don’t reject me!

On blog spam: I have recently been getting a ridiculous amount of spam comments on this blog. My question is, is there a difference between marking them Spam vs. just deleting them? I was hoping that one way would block that email address, but apparently, neither way has worked. I’m getting some 80 spam comments every 2-3 days.

Wow, that’s an obscene amount of spam. Do you have them on approval or automatic posting?

Pepper vs CJ. I have both of these and I think you made the better choice to start out with. I’ve been with CJ a number of years and with Pepper only a few months. I find Pepper much easier to use and find the basics quickly. Good luck with the new affiliate.

I really don’t get spam on this blog, guess I’m lucky so far though… I have noticed a few people posting that have nothing to do with Squidoo, and several that aren’t in English too. Not sure if the good Captain wants to allow that or not. I did report one but nothing happened, so I assume it’s ok.

I really agree, the income form the top tier, even if you have 120 lenses up there, it’s really pitiful if you are trying to make a living. I mean, it’s nice to have of course, but $50 or $100 doesn’t go far.

You can earn far more potentially via affiliate programs etc, but you have to find the secret of not only getting people to click on your web page / lens, but to also decide to buy. That’s the really hard part.

Again there is so much competition, you need to have a niche, or a very good marketing angle, so that you get the traffic.

If you find the secret - please let me know :)
Wish you luck…
Be pleased to help you out with CJ if you need it, and to learn about Pepperjam too.

Not sure about all the comment spam… if you mark it as ’spam’ that should take care of your part. I’ll look and see if there’s an update of some kind though..

as far as PJN goes, congrats! I think that you’ll do well with them. Like anything, it takes a bit of time to get rolling, but being solely dependent on LR payouts can really be tough.

Like poddys said, it’s basically impossible to make a living from adsense share alone, there simply isn’t enough revenue to hand out yet. Maybe one day the adsense share will amount to some bigger bucks but until then even the cafepress, amazon, and ebay modules have more reliable moneymaking opportunities, not to mention programs like PJ and CJ :D

I guess I wasn’t that clear in my blog entry. I have all the comments on needing approval unless I approved the commenter once already. As for the Spam, they all get caught in the filter so they don’t get posted, but many of them come from the same email address (or is labeled that way). I was hoping that tagging it as Spam would automatically block that email from here on out, but that doesn’t happen.

I’m always a bit hesitant about affiliate programs, because they just never seem to make clear on their website how they deal with paying out to affiliates overseas. I mean - checks won’t do me much good - just getting them converted into actual money costs more than I’m likely to make any time soon.

Never found an international affiliate program that actually fit both my niche and my nationality :(
